We love to think that we can get stains out of just about any rug. But, sometimes pets have done too much damage or the carpet’s just plain old. So where do you start when it’s time to buy new carpet? Here are some tips.
Take a good look at your home and decide what you’d like your carpet to do for you. Are you looking to make a one room the center of attention in your home? Or, are you concerned about durability because of kids and pets? Carefully think through the use of your home to figure out the next step.
If you’re worried about wear and tear, you need a stain-resistant, shorter fiber carpet like berber or sisal. Also perfect for high-traffic areas- nylon. While it’s one of the most expensive synthetic fibers, it’s durable and resists most stains. Be sure to ask about the proper padding for the type of carpet you buy.
With carpet, cheaper is definitely not better. While you don’t need to spend a fortune to get great carpet, high quality carpet costs a bit more. And, it’s worth it. It will wear better, it’s easier to clean and more stain resistant (which also makes our job easier in the long run). And, it will last longer.
Installing wall to wall carpet can be kind of tricky, so you’ll want to leave that to the experts. While no carpet seam is invisible, a professional can work wonders. Be sure to ask for references to ensure that you have a top notch installation team.
Finally, take care of your investment. At a minimum, vacuum weekly and if you need to spot clean a stain make sure to use a product that’s safe for both your carpet and environment (we just happen to have one!). Of course, having your carpet professionally cleaned will keep it looking brand new!
